What does "Politically Exposed Person" mean?

According to Financial Action Task Force (FATF), a Politically Exposed Person (PEP) is an individual who has or has been entrusted with prominent public function.  Individuals who are have been entrusted with prominently public functions typically include:
  1. Heads of State or Government
  2. Senior Politicians
  3. Senior Government
  4. Judicial or Military Officials
  5. Senior Executives of State owned corporations
  6. Important Political party officials
The definition of being "Related to a Politically Exposed Person" typically includes:
  1. Family members who are related to PEP either directly or through marriage or similar (civil) partnerships
  2. Individuals who are closely connected to a PEP, either socially or professionally
